We provide three different medications for AUD: Acamprosate (Campral), Disulfiram (Antabuse), and Naltrexone. All of these medications have been studied and shown to be effective and safe when treating AUD. When you get medication-assisted treatment with Better Life Partners, you’ll get help from a clinician in order to determine what medication might be a good fit for you.
For those looking to abstain from alcohol completely, we typically recommend Acamprosate or Disulfiram. These medications work to limit cravings in different ways. Disulfiram works by decreasing cravings and lessening withdrawal symptoms. On the other hand, Acamprosate works by decreasing cravings and causing nausea when taken with alcohol. This unpleasant side-effect lessens the likelihood of drinking.

We use alcohol use disorder instead of alcoholism because AUD includes varying degrees of alcohol use and is a diagnostic medical term, whereas “alcoholism” is a colloquial term that is often interpreted negatively or as referring to someone with a severe alcohol use problem. So, we use AUD to be inclusive and non-judgmental!
Do I need to take medication to be in your program?
