At Better Life Partners we offer a variety of different tools and services for our members living with alcoholism (AUD) to match their varied needs and goals. One of those optional tools is medication-assisted treatment. Medication is not required to join our alcohol treatment program, and many members choose to opt out of it. On the other hand, those who do use medications for AUD find it to be a very helpful support during their recovery.
We have three different medications we can prescribe depending on your overall goal for treatment.
- Acamprosate (Campral): Best for those looking to stop drinking completely and works by eliminating cravings and urges to drink.
- Disulfiram (Antabuse): This is also best for those who want to abstain from alcohol. It works by reducing cravings and causing nausea when combined with alcohol.
- Naltrexone: Best for those whose goal is moderation but not necessarily abstinence. It works by reducing the positive effects of drinking, and also reduces cravings.
If between you and our medical providers you decide one of our medications is a good fit for your recovery, all have been studied and shown to be safe and effective forms of treatment for alcohol use disorder.

That said, we know there are several people out there who don’t relate to that word, so we use it alongside AUD and aim to use alcohol use disorder in place of alcoholism when possible.
We use alcohol use disorder instead of alcoholism because AUD includes varying degrees of alcohol use and is a diagnostic medical term, whereas “alcoholism” is a colloquial term that is often interpreted negatively or as referring to someone with a severe alcohol use problem. So, we use AUD to be inclusive and non-judgmental!
Do I need to take medication to be in your program?
Absolutely not! We never ask our members to do anything they are not comfortable with. Many of our members opt out of medications and others elect to use them. Your recovery is up to you! We’re here to provide you with options so you can choose the treatment style that works best for you.
